6.O Oral and Written Conventions
- 6.19 Students understand the function of and use the conventions of academic language when speaking and writing. Students will continue to apply earlier standards with greater complexity.
- 6.19.A use and understand the function of the following parts of speech in the context of reading, writing, and speaking:
- 6.19.A.i verbs (irregular verbs and active and passive voice);
- Use the correct subject or verb (Sixth grade - AA.1)
- Use the correct verb – with compound subjects (Sixth grade - AA.2)
- Irregular past tense: review (Sixth grade - BB.1)
- Simple past, present, and future tense: review (Sixth grade - BB.2)
- Correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense (Sixth grade - CC.1)
- Identify main verbs and helping verbs (Sixth grade - DD.1)
- Use the progressive verb tenses (Sixth grade - EE.1)
- Form the progressive verb tenses (Sixth grade - EE.2)
- Use the perfect verb tenses (Sixth grade - FF.1)
- Form the perfect verb tenses (Sixth grade - FF.2)
- Choose between the past tense and past participle (Sixth grade - FF.3)
- Identify linking verbs, predicate adjectives, and predicate nouns (Sixth grade - GG.1)

- 6.19.A.ii non-count nouns (e.g., rice, paper);

- 6.19.A.iv conjunctive adverbs (e.g., consequently, furthermore, indeed);
- 6.19.A.v prepositions and prepositional phrases to convey location, time, direction, or to provide details;
- 6.19.A.vi indefinite pronouns (e.g., all, both, nothing, anything);
- 6.19.A.vii subordinating conjunctions (e.g., while, because, although, if); and
- 6.19.A.viii transitional words and phrases that demonstrate an understanding of the function of the transition related to the organization of the writing (e.g., on the contrary, in addition to);

- 6.19.B differentiate between the active and passive voice and know how to use them both; and
- 6.19.C use complete simple and compound sentences with correct subject-verb agreement.
- Identify the complete subject or complete predicate of a sentence (Sixth grade - O.1)
- Identify the simple subject or simple predicate of a sentence (Sixth grade - O.2)
- Identify the compound subject or compound predicate of a sentence (Sixth grade - O.3)
- Is it a complete sentence or a fragment? (Sixth grade - P.1)
- Is it a complete sentence or a run-on? (Sixth grade - P.2)
- Is it a complete sentence, a fragment, or a run-on? (Sixth grade - P.3)
- Identify dependent and independent clauses (Sixth grade - Q.1)

- 6.19.A use and understand the function of the following parts of speech in the context of reading, writing, and speaking:
- 6.2 Students write legibly and use appropriate capitalization and punctuation conventions in their compositions.
- 6.20.A use capitalization for:
- 6.20.A.i abbreviations;
- 6.20.A.ii initials and acronyms; and
- 6.20.A.iii organizations;
- 6.20.B recognize and use punctuation marks including:
- 6.20.B.i commas in compound sentences;
- 6.20.B.ii proper punctuation and spacing for quotations; and
- 6.20.B.iii parentheses, brackets, and ellipses (to indicate omissions and interruptions or incomplete statements); and
- 6.20.C use proper mechanics including italics and underlining for titles of books.
- 6.20.A use capitalization for:
- 6.21 Students spell correctly.
- 6.21.A differentiate between commonly confused terms (e.g., its, it's; affect, effect);
- 6.21.B use spelling patterns and rules and print and electronic resources to determine and check correct spellings; and
- 6.21.C know how to use the spell-check function in word processing while understanding its limitations.
